Retailer Coldwater Creek was founded in 1984 as a catalog-based marketer. For the retailer, revenue peaked at $1.1 billion in 2006, which prompted the company to expand from 198 stores in 2005 to 336 locations in 2007 before the global economic downturn stunted its financial success and triggered a series of management changes.

In 2014, prior to filing Chapter 11 bankruptcy, Coldwater Creek had 365 stores and employed about 6,000 people.

Hilco Merchant Resources partnered with a private equity firm to secure the right to manage the store closing process for Hilco Merchant Resources and to secure the Coldwater Creek intellectual property rights for the private equity firm. This collaboration maximized the value for both companies.
